Margoth PDF - Pour commencer, peux-tu te présenter et nous donner quelques nouvelles en quelques mots?

Stefan Arnold - Je m’appelle Stefan, je viens de la région de Francfort en Allemagne et je joue de la batterie depuis l’âge de 16 ans. J’ai été batteur pour Grave Digger pendant 23 ans. Mon premier groupe était Wallop, puis Grinder suivi de Capricorn.

Margoth PDF - Vous êtes surtout connu pour avoir été le batteur de Grave Digger pendant 22 ans, mais vous avez quitté le groupe en 2018.
Pouvez-vous en expliquer les raisons?

Stefan Arnold - Je n’ai pas démissionné, j’ai été lâchement viré par le chanteur. Le guitariste Axel et Chris ont testés un nouveau batteur derrière mon dos.

Margoth PDF - Il semble que le guitariste Axel Ritt ait été viré du groupe récemment.
Est-ce quelque chose qui vous a surpris?

Stefan Arnold - Non, cela ne m’a pas du tout surpris. C’est un putain de trou du cul absolu, qui n’a pas de colonne vertébrale et il a divisé Grave Digger.

Margoth PDF - Vous avez donc reformé Wallop, votre premier groupe dans les années 80 et un nouvel album "Hell On Wheels" est sorti l’année dernière.
Quand je l’ai écouté, j’ai eu le sentiment que vous vouliez un son de cette époque.
Es-tu d’accord avec moi et pourquoi ce choix?

Stefan Arnold - Tu as tout à fait raison. Depuis des années, nous prévoyions un concert de Wallop dans notre ville natale, mais cela n’a jamais fonctionné, la cause de trop de concerts et d’enregistrements avec Grave Digger.

Margoth PDF - Sur la jaquette, à l’avant du train, on peut lire deux fois le chiffre 69, et on voit les Alpes derrière.
Vouliez-vous faire des références à vos anciens titres?

Stefan Arnold - Exactement. C’est comme une ligne rouge entre la première et la dernière jaquette.

Margoth PDF - Sur l’album, il y a un titre étrange "American 4-4-0".
Pouvez-vous expliquer la signification?

Stefan Arnold - C’est le nom d’une vieille locomotive à vapeur américaine populaire.

Margoth PDF - L’intro de la basse sur "Darkness Comes Rising" me rappelle un peu "Fear Of The Dark" d’Iron Maiden.
Êtes-vous d’accord et est-ce une sorte d’hommage?

Stefan Arnold - Pour être honnête, je n’avais pas réalisé un lien avec "Fear...". Je dirais plutôt Queensrÿche.

Margoth PDF - Je propose de parler de ta carrière.
Pour commencer, peux-tu décrire tes premiers pas dans la musique, quelles ont été tes influences et comment t’es-tu dirigé vers la batterie?

Stefan Arnold - Après avoir reçu KISS - Alive II en cadeau, j’ai étudié la pochette de l’album pendant des heures et j’ai décidé que je voulais devenir batteur. Peter Criss a donc été ma première influence. Cela a radicalement changé, après avoir vu Iron Maiden en première partie de KISS. À partir de ce jour, je me suis rangé du côté de Clive Burr. Aussi, j’aime beaucoup Tommy Lee et Mikkey Dee.

Margoth PDF - Donc, vous avez formé Wallop en 1983 après avoir entendu la chanson de Raven "Crash, Bang, Wallop" et sorti une première démo en 1984.
Était-ce ton premier groupe et peux-tu nous parler des premières années de Wallop?

Stefan Arnold - Wallop était le groupe avec lequel j’ai fait mes premiers pas en tant que musicien. Comme nous n’avions pas de nom pour notre groupe, nous avons étudié les jaquettes des groupes que nous avions dans notre collection de disques. Et finalement, nous avons opté pour Wallop après le mini EP de Raven "Crash, Bang, Wallop".

Margoth PDF - Le chanteur original, Stefan Niebling, avait une voix qui me rappelle Vince Neil de Mötley Crüe.
Celui-ci a quitté le groupe avant l’enregistrement de l’album. Sa voix était-elle trop soft pour le groupe?

Stefan Arnold - Non, il a vraiment eu peur de la situation du studio et a démissionné 2 semaines avant la session d’enregistrement.

Margoth PDF - Le premier album "Metallic Alps" est sorti en 1985. J’ai trouvé ce titre un peu étrange et inhabituel avec l'imagerie heavy metal.
Je me suis demandé si c’était une chanson humoristique ou non. Pouvez-vous nous en expliquer la signification?

Stefan Arnold - Nous avons joué en concert dans notre ville natale dans un pub appelé "Sennhütte", avec une décoration bavarienne à l’intérieur. Et nous avions besoin d’une chanson de plus pour remplir notre set ce soir-là. Nous avons donc décidé de composer "Metallic Alps" pour avoir un titre mélangeant musique bavaroise classique et Heavy Metal.

Margoth PDF - Vous aviez un nouveau chanteur, Mikk Wega, qui est toujours présent dans le groupe.
Peux-tu le présenter et nous dire comment il a rejoint le groupe?

Stefan Arnold - Nous avons eu ce problème, que notre chanteur d’origine, Stefan Niebeling, quitte le groupe, deux semaines avant l’enregistrement de notre premier album. Mikk était chanteur dans un autre groupe local et nous lui avons demandé, aide nous et rejoint nous peut-être, ce qu’il a fait.

Margoth PDF - Quand j’ai écouté l’album, j’ai beaucoup pensé à Accept et à l’album "Breaker", surtout sur les riffs de guitare.
Était ce un album que vous écoutiez beaucoup à l’époque?

Stefan Arnold - Nous écoutions tous ces groupes de metal classiques de l’époque : Saxon, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Raven, Accept, Metallica, Def Leppard, Ozzy et même Grave Digger.

Margoth PDF - "Metallic Alps" a été réédité en 2008 avec les démos de 1984 et 1986.
Il semble qu’il y ait eu une autre démo en 1985. Pourquoi celle-ci n’est-elle pas incluse?

Stefan Arnold - Parce que ce n’est pas NOUS qui l’avons publié chez Wallop. Il s’agissait d’une sortie illégale par quelqu’un de grec. Nous n’avons eu AUCUNE influence.

Margoth PDF - Le groupe s’est séparé en 1987 après le retour de Stefan Niebling.
Pouvez-vous nous en expliquer les raisons?

Stefan Arnold - C’est une réponse facile. Parce qu’il n’y avait plus de succès et par conséquent pas d’avenir.

Margoth PDF - Puis tu as rejoint un groupe appelé Grinder jusqu’en 1992, et le nom a changé pour devenir Capricorn.
Grinder est un titre de Judas Priest et Capricorn de Motörhead.
Est-ce l’explication de ces noms de groupe?

Stefan Arnold - Grinder existait déjà, quand je les ai rejoints. Donc, je ne leur ai jamais demandé pourquoi ils appelaient le groupe Grinder. Et Capricorn a vraiment été nommé d’après le titre de Motörhead.

Margoth PDF - Le style du groupe est plutôt thrash metal.
Pour toi, qui viens du hard rock et du heavy metal, comment t’es-tu adapté pour une musique plus agressive?

Stefan Arnold - À l’époque, j’étais amoureux de Flotsam & Jetsam. Et Grinder est allé exactement dans cette direction musicale.

Margoth PDF - En 1995, tu as participé au "X-Mas Project II" où tu partage la batterie avec Jörg Michael.
Celui-ci a déjà joué avec Grave Digger.
C’est lui qui a donné ton contact au groupe?

Stefan Arnold - Non, c’était sûr, que Jörg quitterai Grave Digger après "Symphony Of Death", pour rejoindre Running Wild. Grave Digger a essayé avec Frank Ulrich à la batterie, mais il n’était pas un gars très metal. Grave Digger s’est souvenu de moi, étant à la batterie dans leur groupe d’ouverture Capricorn lors de leur tournée de reformation. Et ils m’ont appelé pour une audition.

Margoth PDF - Puis, en 1996, tu as rejoint Grave Digger pour 22 ans et 14 albums.
Mon titre préféré du groupe est "Ballads Of A Hangman" avec ce côté puissant.
J’aimerais savoir ce que ce titre t'évoques et si tu as un titre ou un album préféré?

Stefan Arnold - J’ai rejoint Grave Digger en 1995.
"Ballads Of A Hangman" est l’un de mes albums préférés, y compris la chanson titre. C’est le morceau d’ouverture parfait en live et sur l’album. "Tunes Of War" et "The Grave Digger" sont aussi de très, très bons albums.

Margoth PDF - En 1999, Grave Digger a sorti "Excalibur" qui est un concept sur les chevaliers de la table ronde.
Pour cet album, tu as pris le surnom de Gauvain.
Qu’est-ce que l’histoire de ce chevalier t'évoques?

Stefan Arnold - Honnêtement, il n’y a pas d’histoire derrière. Chris a juste décidé cela sans raison. Il est venu nous dire qui d’entre nous a quel nom venant des gars de la table ronde.

Margoth PDF - Pour la préparation de cette interview, j’ai regardé le DVD "Tunes Of Wacken" et je me suis interrogé sur un détail.
Ta batterie semble très loin de la foule. Ma question est la suivante : quand tu joues dans un show comme celui-ci, est-ce que tu profites du moment et est-ce que tu peux voir les gens ?

Stefan Arnold - Même dans ces grands shows, je me rends compte de la foule et j’apprécie chaque seconde.

Margoth PDF - En ce qui concerne le line-up, je pense que Manni Schmidt a beaucoup apporté à Grave Digger, et son départ a été une grosse perte.
Partages tu mon opinion et te souviens tu des raisons pour lesquelles il est parti?

Stefan Arnold - Jens, Manni et moi étions le meilleur line-up que Chris ai eu de toute sa carrière. Après le départ de Manni, rien n’était plus comme avant et Axel a tout gâché et enterré Grave Digger en tant que groupe. Au final, ce n’était qu’un projet et plus un groupe.

Margoth PDF - Il est impossible de retracer complètement tes années dans Grave Digger.
Alors, as tu une anecdote que vous aimeriez nous raconter?

Stefan Arnold - Il y a des centaines d’histoires. Pour moi, le plus important a été le spectacle WACKEN 2010 avec un orchestre écossais, nous n’avons pas répété une seconde avec l’orchestre et nous avons quand même fait un show parfait. Et je n’oublierai jamais la tournée de neuf semaines aux États-Unis et au Canada avec Blind Guardian en 2015/16.

Margoth PDF - En 2008, tu es invité par Markus Grosskopf de Helloween à jouer sur l’album "Hellbassbeaters" de BassInvaders où tu partages la batterie avec André Hilgers.
Peux-tu nous raconter cette expérience?

Stefan Arnold - C’était un week-end à Hambourg, avec beaucoup de sueur et d’alcool. J’aimais l’idée de Markus.

Margoth PDF - Sur cet album, tu joues sur la reprise de "Eagle Fly Free".
En tant que fan, je voulais savoir ce que tu pensais du jeu de batterie d’Ingo Schwichtenberg et si tu le connaissais quand il était vivant?

Stefan Arnold - Wallop et Helloween jouaient déjà ensemble en 1985 où j’ai naturellement rencontré Ingo. C’était un gars sympa, mais il a fini tragiquement. C’était un honneur pour moi de jouer cette chanson.

Margoth PDF - Retour à Wallop. Vous avez reformé le groupe en 2018 après ton départ de Grave Digger.
Est-ce que ces retrouvailles sont quelque chose que vous vouliez faire depuis longtemps?

Stefan Arnold - Oui, nous avions prévu cela depuis longtemps, mais il y avait toujours qui se passait au milieu. La fin de l’année 2018 était donc le moment idéal pour gérer la reformation.

Margoth PDF - Vous commencez par un premier ep de 4 titres où l’on retrouve "Wall Of Sound" et "Fun For The Nun".
Ces deux chansons sont-elles des compositions nouvelles ou anciennes?

Stefan Arnold - Les deux sont des compositions très, très anciennes, qui n’ont pas été retenues sur "Metallic Alps".

Margoth PDF - Donc, 2020, et "Alps On Fire", une nouvelle version de "Metallic’Alps".
Ces versions sont très différentes, on sent que vous avez pris de l’expérience pendant toutes ces années...

Stefan Arnold - C’était exactement le plan. Nous voulions donner une autre chance à ces morceaux oldschool. Naturellement, au fil des ans, nos compétences instrumentales se sont améliorées et nous avons réarrangé tous les titres pour en obtenir de meilleures versions.

Margoth PDF - Sur cet album, on retrouve la reprise de "Crash ! Bang! Wallop !" de Raven avec John Gallagher lui-même comme invité.
Peux-tu nous en parler, je suppose que c’était un grand moment?

Stefan Arnold - C’était un moment incroyable, qu’il nous ait soutenus sur ce morceau. En août dernier, nous avons fait 2 concerts avec Raven et il est monté sur scène pour jouer avec nous.

Margoth PDF - "Hell On Wheels" arrive ainsi en 2024.
Pourquoi 4 ans d’attente pour un album avec de nouvelles compositions?

Stefan Arnold - Parce que nous n’étions pas pressés. On fait Wallop à côté. Tout le monde dans le groupe a des boulots sérieux et c’est vraiment un plaisir après toutes ces années de folie de ne pas avoir de pression.

Margoth PDF - Ok, quels sont vos projets pour l’avenir? Des dates en France sont-elles possibles?

Stefan Arnold - Peut-être donner plus de concerts avec Raven et quelques festivals, bien sûr si possible, aussi en France. Ce serait un honneur pour nous.

Margoth PDF - To start with, can you introduce yourself and give us some news in a few words?

Stefan Arnold - I’m Stefan from Frankfurt area in Germany and I play drums, since I’m 16 years old. I was drummer for Grave Digger for 23 years. My first band was Wallop, then Grinder followed by Capricorn.

Margoth PDF - You're best known for have been The Drummer of Grave Digger for 22 years, but you quit the band in 2018.
Can you explain the reasons?

Stefan Arnold - I didn’t quit, I was fired in a cowardly way 🐀 by the singer. Guitarist Axel and Chris organized a new drummer behind my back.

Margoth PDF - It seems the guitar player Axel Ritt was fired from the band recently.
Is this something who surprised you?

Stefan Arnold - No, this didn’t surprise me at all. He is an absolute fucking asshole, who has no backbone and he splitted Grave Digger.

Margoth PDF - So you formed again Wallop, your first band in the 80s and a new album "Hell On Wheels" was released last year.
When i listened to it, i had the feeling that you wanted a sound of this period.
Do you agree me and why this choice?

Stefan Arnold - You’re absolutely right. Since years, we were planning a Wallop Show in our hometown, but it never worked, because of too many shows and recordings with Grave Digger.

Margoth PDF - On the cover, at the front of the train, the number 69 can be read twice, and we see the alps behind.
Do you wanted to make references to your olds songs?

Stefan Arnold - Exactly. It’s like a red line from first to our last cover artwork.

Margoth PDF - On the album, there is a strange title "American 4-4-0"
Can you explain the signification?

Stefan Arnold - That’s the name of an old, popular American steam locomotive 🚂.

Margoth PDF - The bass intro on "Darkness Comes Rising" reminds me a little bit "Fear Of The Dark" by Iron Maiden.
Do you agree and is it a kind of tribute?

Stefan Arnold - To be honest, I didn’t realize a connection to “Fear…”. I would go more for Queensryche”.

Margoth PDF - I suggest that we talk about your career.
To start with, can you describe your first steps in music, what were your influences and how did you headed to drums?

Stefan Arnold - After I got KISS Alive ll as a present, I studied the album cover for hours and decided, that I wanted to get a drummer 🥁. So Peter Criss was my first influence. That changed dramatically, after I saw Iron Maiden as opener for KISS. From that day on, I stood with Clive Burr. Also I really enjoy Tommy Lee and Mikkey Dee.

Margoth PDF - So You formed Wallop in 1983 after hearing Raven's song "Crash, Bang, Wallop" and released a first demo in 1984.
Was it your first band and can you tell us about the early years of Wallop?

Stefan Arnold - Wallop was the band, I made my first steps with as a musician. Because we had no name for our band, we studied the covers of bands we had in our record collection. And finally, we decided for Wallop after Ravens’ mini EP “Crash, Bang, Wallop”.

Margoth PDF - The original singer, Stefan Niebling, had a voice who reminds me Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe.
This one's left the band before the recording of the album. Did his voice too soft for the band?

Stefan Arnold - No, he really afraid of the studio situation and quited 2 weeks before the recording session.

Margoth PDF - So, the first album "Metallic Alps" was released in 1985. I found this track a bit strange and unusual with heavy metal imagery.
I wondered if it was a humoristic song or not. Can you explain the meaning?

Stefan Arnold - We played on gig in our hometown in a pub called “Sennhütte“, with bavarien decoration inside. And we needed one more song to fill up our program that night. So we decided to compose „Metallic Alps“ to have a mixture title of classic bavarian music and Heavy Metal.

Margoth PDF - You had a new singer, Mikk Wega, who still present in the band.
Can you introduce him and can you tell us how he joined the band?

Stefan Arnold - We had the problem, that our original singer, Stefan Niebeling, left the band, two weeks before recording our first album. Mikk was singer in an other local band and we asked him, help us and maybe join us, what he did.

Margoth PDF - When I listened to the album, I thought a lot about Accept and the "Breaker" album, especially on the guitar riffs.
Was it an album that you listened to a lot at the time?

Stefan Arnold - We listened to all those classic metal bands from those days: Saxon, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Raven, Accept, Metallica, Def Leppard, Ozzy and even Grave Digger.

Margoth PDF - "Metallic Alps" was reissued in 2008 with the demos of 1984 and 1986.
It seems there was another demo in 1985. Why this one's not included?

Stefan Arnold - Because not WE as Wallop published it. It was an illegal release by someone from Greek. We had NO influence.

Margoth PDF - The band splitted in 1987 after return of Stefan Niebling.
Can you explain us the reasons?

Stefan Arnold - That’s an easy answer. Because there was no success anymore and by that no future.

Margoth PDF - Then you joined a band called Grinder until 1992, and the name changed to Capricorn.
Grinder is a track by Judas Priest and Capricorn by Motörhead.
Is this the explanation for these band names?

Stefan Arnold - Grinder existed already, when I joined them. So, I never asked them, why they called the band Grinder. And Capricorn was really named after Motörheads‘ titel.

Margoth PDF - The style of the band is rather thrash metal.
For you, who came from hard rock and heavy metal, how did you adapted for a more aggressive music?

Stefan Arnold - In those days I felt in love for „Flotsam&Jetsom“. And Grinder went exactly in that musical direction.

Margoth PDF - In 1995, you participated at "X-Mas Project II" where you share drums with Jorg Michael.
This one's played with Grave Digger before.
Is it him who gave your contact to the band?

Stefan Arnold - No, it was safe, that Jörg will leave Grave Digger after „Symphony of Death“, to join Running Wild. Grave Digger tried it with Frank Ulrich on drums, but he was no metal guy. So Grave Digger remembered me, being on drums in their opener band Capricorn on their reunion tour. And they called me for an audition.

Margoth PDF - Then in 1996, you joined Grave Digger for 22 years and 14 albums.
My favorite song of the band is "Ballads Of A Hangman" with this powerful side.
I would like to know what this song evokes to you and if you had a favorite song or album?

Stefan Arnold - I joined Grave Digger in 1995.
„Ballads of a Hangman“ is one of my favorite albums including the title track. It’s the perfect opener track live and on the album. Tunes of war and The Grave Digger are also very, very good albums.

Margoth PDF - In 1999, Grave Digger released "Excalibur" which is a concept about knights of the round table.
For this album, you took the nickname of Gawain.
What the story of this knight evokes to you?

Stefan Arnold - Honestly there is no story behind it. Chris just decided that for no reason. He just informed us, who of us has wich name from the roundtable guys.

Margoth PDF - For the preparation of this interview, i watched the DVD "Tunes Of Wacken" and i wondered about a détail.
Your drums seems very far of the crowd. My question is, when you play on a show like this, do you enjoy the moment and can you see the people?

Stefan Arnold - Even in these big shows, I realize/see the crowd and enjoy each second.

Margoth PDF - About the line-up, i think Manni Schmidt brought a lot to Grave Digger, and his departure was a big loss.
Do you share my opinion, and do you remember the reasons why he left?

Stefan Arnold - Jens, Manni and me were the best line up, Chris had in his whole career. After Manni left, nothing was the same and Axel ruined everything and buried Grave Digger as a band. At the end, it was just a project and no band anymore.

Margoth PDF - It's impossible to retrace completely your years in Grave Digger.
So, do you have an anecdote that you would like to tell us?

Stefan Arnold - There are hundreds of stories. For me, the most important thing was the 2010 WACKEN show with Scottish orchestra, we didn’t practice even one second with the orchestra and still made a perfect show. And I will never forget the nine weeks U.S./Canada tour with Blind Guardian in 2015/16.

Margoth PDF - In 2008, you're invited by Markus Grosskopf from Helloween to play on the album "Hellbassbeaters" from BassInvaders where you share drums with Andre Hilgers.

Stefan Arnold - It was a weekend thing in Hamburg with a lot of sweat and alcohol. I liked the idea of Marcus.

Margoth PDF - Back to Wallop. You reformed the band in 2018 after your departure from Grave Digger.
Does this reunion is Something you wanted to make since a long time?

Stefan Arnold - Yes, we planned this for a long time, but there was always something, what came between. So, end 2018 was the perfect moment, to manage the reunion.

Margoth PDF - You begin by a first 4 tracks ep where we find "Wall Of Sound" and "Fun For The Nun".
Does these two songs a new or old compositions?

Stefan Arnold - Both are very, very old compositions, which didn’t make it on “Metallic Alps”

Margoth PDF - So, 2020, and "Alps On Fire", a new version of "Metallic'Alps".
These versions are very different, we feel that you took experience during all these years…

Stefan Arnold - Exactly that was the plan. We wanted to give those oldschool tracks another chance. Naturally over the years our instrumental skills got better and we rearranged all titles to better versions.

Margoth PDF - On this album, we find the cover of "Crash ! Bang ! Wallop !" by Raven with John Gallagher himself as a guest.
Can you tell us about it, i guess it was a great moment?"

Stefan Arnold - This was an unbelievable moment, that he supported us on this track. Last August, we played 2 shows with Raven and he entered the stage to perform with us.

Margoth PDF - "Hell On Wheels" arrive so in 2024.
Why 4 years of waiting for a album with new compositions?

Stefan Arnold - Because we had no rush. We do Wallop on the side. Everyone in the band has serious jobs and it’s really a pleasure after all those crazy years to have no pressure.

Margoth PDF - Ok, what are your plans for the future? Dates in France are possibles?

Stefan Arnold - Maybe to play more shows with Raven and some festival, naturally if possible, also in France. It would be an honor for us.

Margoth PDF - We arrive at the end of the interview.
