1- Bonjour à vous! Comment ça va ? Pouvez-vous nous résumer l’histoire de Sigir ?

Bonjour! Nous nous sentons absolument fantastiques ! Nous sommes ravis de la sortie de notre premier album. L’histoire remonte à 2019, lorsque nous avons commencé à faire des chansons pour cet album. Nous n’avions pas encore de nom, mais cette fois-là, nous savions que nous avions commencé. Le line-up de départ était composé de Viljami Toikkanen à la guitare et au chant, Paavo Luttinen à la basse, Eetu Pennanen à la batterie et Henriikka Haatainen aux claviers. Plus tard, nous nous sommes séparés d’Henriikka et Valtteri Pitkänen nous a rejoints à la deuxième guitare.

2- Le nom Sigir a t-il une signification particulière ou est-ce un nom qui vous est venu comme ça, au hasard ?

Quand nous avons inventé ce nom, nous avions la vision d’un nom court, qui ressemble un peu à ce que nous sommes. C’est un nom un peu brutal et primitif, mais ça ne veut rien dire. 

3- Vous avez fait le choix d’un death mélodique mais en distillant une atmosphère un peu occulte. Est-ce volontaire ou est-ce lié à la somme des influences de chacun ?

Ce style était le plus intuitif pour nous à l’époque et il a parfaitement fonctionné depuis. Ce genre se situe un peu au milieu de nos goûts musicaux. Et nous sommes à notre meilleur lorsque nous faisons ce genre de musique.

4- Rainmaker est votre premier album. Votre approche induit aussi des contrastes, entre les mélodies, les rythmiques parfois soutenues, cette ambiance qui imprègne l’album et le visuel de l’album. Vouliez-vous de cette manière plonger l’auditeur dans un univers particulier ?

Nous pensons que le paysage visuel de cette musique remonte à la Finlande du 19e siècle. Les forêts, les lacs et les villages par exemple.

5- En regardant les titres, il me semble déceler un certain fil rouge ou une trame qui suit l’album. Est-ce le cas et avez-vous un concept derrière l’album (un lien avec une mythologie) ou suis-je dans l’erreur ?

Il n’y a pas de concept particulier qui suit l’album, mais le même paysage visuel doit être consenti dans chaque chanson.

6- Comme dit plus haut, vous œuvrez dans le death mélodique mais cela ne vous empêche pas d’avoir des passages très soutenus et surtout une section rythmique très puissante, effleurant parfois un death plus brutal. Est-ce pour amener différentes facettes (hypothèse que je base avec des éléments plus doom death parfois présents), vous permettant de tisser une trame réfléchie ?

Oui, nous nous situons un peu entre plusieurs genres. Tous les différents styles que nous combinons se trouvent dans les chansons. Cela s’est fait intuitivement, puisque nous visons un son brutal.

7- Vous amenez aussi une émotion particulière, entre nostalgie et mélancolie. Est-ce calculé par rapport au concept et à la musique ou cet aspect est venu naturellement ?

C’est aussi venu un peu naturellement, mais c’est un ingrédient de notre musique qui doit être présent.

8- Il y a un soin important dans les atmosphères. Est-ce une clé importante pour vous pour plonger dans l’immersion et donner quelque chose de plus palpable ?

L’immersion est une partie importante de notre musique. Notre musique doit être un peu visuelle et différents paysages/scènes de mémoire nous ont en fait aidés à écrire ces chansons. Nous espérons que ces chansons apporteront des émotions et des paysages mentaux aux auditeurs.

9- Le chant de Viljami Toikkanen est intéressant car il ne s’arrête pas simplement à un chant classique mais va aussi explorer d’autres facettes (je trouve quelques relents black metal ici et là), notamment par son timbre de voix. Comment a t-il appréhender son chant et est-ce une réflexion du groupe pour celui-ci ?

Fondamentalement, le cri médium est le style vocal le plus intuitif pour lui. Il y a aussi quelques grognements graves sur ce disque quand c’est nécessaire. Ce style de cri correspond à la musique à notre avis. Aborder ce genre de voix, c’était juste essayer de trouver la technique vocale la plus facile et ne pas essayer de trop la pousser.

10- Avec tous ces éléments, la question des influences se pose. Quelles sont-elles ?

Les groupes les plus influents pourraient être Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Wintersun et Ensiferum. Bien sûr, la nature et les paysages ont aussi leur influence dans cet album.

11- Le visuel est intéressant. Il contraste avec la musique, tout en entretenant des liens (le côté sombre, l’aspect brut et un esthétisme qui se retrouve dans les mélodies), offrant vraiment une ambiance plus black metal. Que représente le visuel, qui est derrière celui-ci et quelle est son importance pour vous?

Si vous entendez par là la pochette de l’album, elle a été réalisée par hellish.maggot (Instagram). C’est essentiellement l’idée originale de la divinité Rainmaker. Nous voulions un thème en noir et blanc juste pour qu’il soit brut et primitif, comme l’est partiellement notre son. Le côté visuel, comme la pochette, est vraiment important pour cette musique. Il doit s’intégrer parfaitement dans le style.

12- Avec tout ça, l’album n’aurait-il pas une dimension plus symbolique voire spirituel et si c’est le cas, quel est votre but derrière celui-ci ?

Eh bien, il n’y a pas de symbolisme réel derrière la musique, mais nous pensons que tout le monde peut entendre cette musique différemment et que tout le monde peut trouver des objectifs différents pour nos paroles.

13- Sigir vous laisse t-il du temps pour d’autres choses ou est-il l’essentiel actuellement ?

C’est certainement la chose la plus importante pour nous. Mais oui, nous avons tous nos devoirs à l’école et au travail, donc cela ne peut pas encore prendre tout le temps. Mais j’espère qu’un jour ce sera le cas !

14- Quels sont les projets à venir pour Sigir dans les mois qui viennent ?

En ce moment, il y a de nouvelles chansons en préparation. Cela prend beaucoup de temps à finaliser, mais à part ça, nous faisons un peu de concert en Finlande. Et répéter et répéter continuellement notre set.

1- Hello to you! How are you doing? Can you summarize the history of Simir?

Hello! We are doing absolutely fantastic! Stoked about releasing our debut album. The history goes back to 2019, when we started making songs for this album. We didn’t have name yet, but that time we knew we basically started all this. Startin lineup was Viljami Toikkanen on guitar and vocals, Paavo Luttinen on bass, Eetu Pennanen on drums and Henriikka Haatainen on keyboards. Later we parted ways with Henriikka and Valtteri Pitkänen joined us in second guitar.

2- Does the name Sigir have a special meaning or is it a name that came to you just like that, randomly?

When we made up that name, we had a vision of a short name, that kinda sounds like what we are. It’s kinda brutal and primitive name, but doesn’t mean anything really. 

3- You have chosen a melodic death metal but with a slightly occult atmosphere. Is this deliberate or is it related to the sum of everyone's influences?

That style was the most intuitive to us back then and it has worked since then perfectly. This genre kinda sits in the middle of our musical taste. And we are at our best when doing this kind of music.

4- Rainmaker is your first album. Your approach also induces contrasts, between the melodies, the sometimes sustained rhythms, this atmosphere that permeates the album and the visual of the album. Did you want to immerse the listener in a particular universe?

There is no particular concept that follows through the album, but the same visual scape needs be consent in every song.


5- Looking at the tracks, I seem to detect a certain common thread or a framework that follows the album. Is this the case and do you have a concept behind the album (a link to a mythology) or am I wrong?

6- As said above, you work in melodic death metal but that doesn't prevent you from having very sustained passages and especially a very powerful rhythm section, sometimes touching a more brutal death metal. Is it to bring different facets (hypothesis that I base with more doom death elements sometimes present), allowing you to weave a thoughtful framework?

Yes we kinda fall in between of multiple genres. All the different styles we combine just happened to sit in the songs. It basically happened intuitively, since we kinda aim for brutal sound.

7- You also bring a particular emotion, between nostalgia and melancholy. Is it calculated in relation to the concept and the music or did this aspect come naturally?

It also came kinda naturally, but that’s one ingredient in our music that has to be present.

8- There is an important care in the atmospheres. Is this an important key for you to dive into immersion and give something more palpable?

Immersion is an important part of our music. Our music needs to be kinda visual and different landscaped/scenes from memory actually helped us writing these songs. We hope these songs brings emotions and mindscapes to the listeners.

9- Viljami Toikkanen's vocals are interesting because they don't just stop at classical vocals but also explore other facets (I find some black metal hints here and there), especially through his voice. How did he approach his singing and is it a reflection of the band for it?

Basically the mid-pitched scream is the most intuitive vocal style for him. There are some low growls too on this record when needed. That style of screaming fits the music in our opinion. Approaching these kind of vocals was just to try to find the easiest vocal technique and not try to push it too much.

10- With all these elements, the question of influences arises. What are they?

The most influential bands could be Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Wintersun and Ensiferum. Orcourse nature and landscapes has their influence too in this album.

11- The visuals are interesting. It contrasts with the music, while maintaining links (the dark side, the raw aspect and an aestheticism that can be found in the melodies), really offering a more black metal atmosphere. What does the visual represent, who is behind it and how important is it to you?

If by that you mean the album cover, it was made by hellish.maggot(Instagram). That’s basically the original idea of Rainmaker godhead. We wanted black and white theme just for it being raw and primitive, like our sound partially is. The visual side, like the cover art are really important for this music. It needs to fit into style perfectly.

12- With all that, wouldn't the album have a more symbolic or even spiritual dimension and if that's the case, what is your goal behind it?

Well there’s not an actual symbolism behind the music, but we think everyone can hear this music differently and everyone can find different purposes for our lyrics.

13- Does Sigir leave you time for other things or is it the most important thing right now?

It certainly is the most important thing for us. But yeah, we all have our duties at school and work, so it can’t take all the time yet. But hopefully someday it does!

14- What are Simir's upcoming projects in the coming months?

Right now there are some new songs in the making. That takes a lot of time to get finalized, but besides that we are doing some show in Finland. And continuously rehearsing and practicing our set.
